Group A Preview: USA, Panama, Albania, Ukraine
The host nation opens the tournament in Group A. Can the USMNT convert home advantage into a deep run? We break down every team's chances.
Group A has all the ingredients of a compelling opener β the host nation, a resilient Central American side, a European debutant, and a war-torn nation playing for more than just football.
United States
The USMNT enter as heavy favourites to top the group. With a young, technically gifted squad featuring stars from Europe's top leagues, Gregg Berhalter's side has the quality and the crowd to go deep. Their opening match against Panama will set the tone.
Ukraine
Ukraine's presence at this World Cup carries enormous emotional weight. The squad, many of whom have seen their club football disrupted, will be fuelled by a nation watching from afar. Expect high intensity, strong organisation, and genuine quality in midfield.
Panama
Back for their second World Cup, Panama are compact and disciplined. They'll make life uncomfortable for the USA, as they historically have in CONCACAF qualifiers. Don't underestimate them.
Albania
Making their World Cup debut, Albania earned their spot through a stellar qualification campaign. Limited experience at this level, but with nothing to lose they could spring a surprise.
Verdict
USA and Ukraine to progress. Panama will make it tight, Albania could steal a point.
